Hanoi Opera House

The Hanoi Opera House is one of the big investments of French in 1911 especially this incredible architecture was renovated in the late 1990s. What is more, the French old theatre was attached to the typical Mosaic and Gothic features on the glassed room and door domes relatively. Its highlights are its facade belonging to colonial French architecture with balconies and pillars overlooking the heart of Hanoi city.

With 900 seats, the opera house can provide a spacious space for a large number of home and outside visitors for enjoying the good Vietnamese symphonies and foreign performances. Besides the unique architecture inside, the Hanoi Opera House’s exterior is an interesting combination of French neo-classical shuttered windows, tiles friezes and wrought iron balconies.

This is not only one of the most great tourist attractions in Hanoi with home and outside visitors but also for many years ago, this place has been considered as an ideal rendezvous with the lovers of theatrical performance as well as traditional, folk and classical music of songs, symphonies, opera even ballets, piano and Vietnamese drama. For this reason, people organized countless international concerts with big scale at the Hanoi Opera House about all kinds of artistic performances.

The History of Hanoi Opera House

As I said easier, thanks to two designers: Harley and Broyer, the French Colonialist Government started to build this major construction in 7/6/1901 even they took a very long time for finishing it (during the early years of the 20th century). However, because of other architects’ ideas, it was modified many times by Harley Architect – a local supervisor (undertaker), Mr Travary and Savelon (foremen).

The whole building is 34 meters in a total area of 2600 square meters (the 87 meters in length and 30 meters in width). Especially, to create this extremely unique architecture, they were consulted about information as well as features of Tuylory Castle, Corankta Greek ancient architecture and Opera de Paris for creating a great combination.

For the mentioned reasons above, it always has a major value in the world’s architecture, history and the usage. Specifically, under the French rule, this vestige has been considered as a historical evidence about development of Vietnamese society and culture.

In addition, it itself is a development stage of architecture with the date from the end of 19th to the beginning of 20th centuries. Also, it has been a striking demonstration for several important historical events relating to the early years of Vietnam Democratic Republic and the August Revolution.

The architecture of Hanoi Opera House

In general, the biggest Vietnamese Hanoi opera house is famous for the unique architecture as well as good parts thanks to the rational and harmonious combination. In the past, its side has a large pond next to the Tay Luong (Tay Long)’s city gate of the old Thang Long Capital.

In spite of many difficulties with construction in the building process on this pond, everyone tried the best that means they built the concrete foundation about a metre in thickness especially they also create a emptied and dredged pond for placing 30,000 hard bamboo stakes on the bed.

As you knew, the Hanoi opera house has the same architectural style with the French Opera House. However, according to the foreign architects, our opera house was built after about 300 years the Paris Opera House so it is a magnificent and attractive building without having the superfluous architectural details.

Besides 900 seats, the inside opera house has a big stage and a 24x24m main audience room even on the central floor, people equipped a large number of small rooms for audiences. On the second floor, to go on the big Hall, you would pass middle staircase while both of sides have the sub-staircase and corridors. Also at this floor, you would be admired a magnificent mirror room in front of the stairs.

In terms of its back, it is very easy for you to see a management chamber including 2 voice training, 18 make-up, a meeting and a library room.
