Hoa Lo Prison (Hanoi hilton)

Hoa Lo prison (Tran Hung Dao ward, Hoan Kiem district) was named after the old street in Hanoi which had before French colonialism. This place used to detain many great revolutionaries of Vietnam.

The history

As I said easier, this Hoa Lo prison (Hanoi hilton) in the French district, Hanoi was notorious due to it was used to serve the bad purpose of French colonial government during the Vietnamese war.

However, in terms of the long-term history aspect, it was the Vietnamese resistance movement’s breeding ground especially afterwards, it became the main prison for our American Prisoners.

Because the prisoners of this place increased more and more, its condition is also worse and worse. What is more, notwithstanding the extremely horrific environment of Vietnam War American POW, at that time, our government denied all of claims. This was called Maison from 1886 to 1901 where was built by French.

At this place, people use the variety of different tortures for extracting the confidential information from the US soldiers: rope bindings, beatings, irons and prolonged solitary confinement.

Although Hoa Lo prison was destroyed in the middle of 1990 and 1999, the chain of international hotels Hilton built Hanoi Opera Hotel near to the location of this prison.

With order of building an unbreakable prison of the French governor, when finishing, it has become one of the most Indochinese steady and proud architectures of French Governor.

To increase its extra thickness, the kind of tailor brick was utilized especially people used the steel rod and stone about 4m in height and 0.5m in thickness for the surrounded walls.

However, its pieces of broken glasses and bare wires were connected with high-voltage power without being covered by clothes or anything else. Finally, to improve its solid, all of the Hoa Lo prison’s locks, windows and doors were taken from France.
