One Pillar Pagoda

The One Pillar Pagoda is also called Dien Huu that literally means “long lasting happiness and good luck”. In 1049 of Ly Thai Tong dynasty, it was built. Legend has it that at that time, the Emperor Ly Thai Tong was elderly without any sons so he went regularly to pagoda and prayed for a son.

One night, he dreamed about Guan Yin Buddha being seated on a lotus in square lake of the Western Thang Long especially she was holding a baby for giving King. Shortly after the queen’s son was born. For this reason, the King built this One Pillar Pagoda with appearance as in his dream in order to worship Buddha Guanyin.

This pagoda is also considered as the symbolic capital related to the founding king of the Ly dynasty. It was built near to the area of the Forbidden City so it was easier for Emperor to perform the blessing ceremony on the fifteenth day of the month or the first day every month.

According to history, the One Pillar Pagoda is built on the first time in 1049: “Formerly, Emperor said to his subjects about the dream Guanyin Buddha sitting on the Lotus and taking him on there. Although many people believe that this is a bad omen, according to Thien Tue monk’s advise, the King built the Dien Huu pagoda on Winter October with the stone column in the middle of land and lotus of the Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara as his dream.

Moreover, he allows monks to go around for chanting for his long-lived life so it is named Dien Huu (long lasting happiness and good luck). In the spring of 1070 Spirit Martial January 2nd, Emperor wrote “the Buddha word” into a rod 6 feet into stone.”

Architecture of One Pillar Pagoda

The Emperor repaired Thien Huu pagoda secondly in 1105: “the fall in September, this pagoda was more beautiful the old one with Lotus Flower Shrine lake (Linh Chieu lake). The outdoor lake is the bass-relief lateral corridor around and the outside lateral corridor is dug lake.

With Bich Tri pond, people pass via a rainbow-shaped bridge. The front of pagoda’s platform is a gem tower. Before entering, you will be admired the blue stone building with 8 rod in hight (about 26m) in the front of the pagoda’s gate.

The whole pagoda is a cluster of magnificent architecture with the unique ideal and beautiful aestheticism which have been ruined by war even it has become a dense and grassy place since wars with enemy”

According to a large number of ancient documents, the miraculous column height of 20m including Sung Dien Linh’s stele in Long Doi Nam Ha has described and documented meticulously about going on building One Pillar Pagoda by Nguyen Cong Bat.

This is a creative architecture – the combination of architectural space with high and low rhythms: stone sculpture, painting and bass-relief lateral corridor which is the symbol of culture, high art and nationalism.

Because of the destroyed pagoda, when building again, it is smaller than prototype. I repeat there was a cluster of unique architecture at this place a while.
